Women of Distinction
Three Charity Guild members were honored on September 14, 2016, with the Emeritus Award, the highest recognition given members. Vivienne Bartlett, Leanna Reidy, and Marilyn Wood received the award from Guild chaplain, Father Kevin Storey, CSB, assisted by Jean Phillips, President. The three honorees have a combined total of 84 years of membership and have served as officers, members of committees, and chairs of departments in the shop. Congratulations to three special ladies!
A VALUABLE MELISH MAP DISCOVERED
During the summer of 2015 a Guild member working in the books and art department opened a leather case that a consignor brought into Charity Guild Shop. There she discovered an early map of the United States. Suspecting it had value, she consulted a map collector and dealer who determined it was a map published by John Melish around 1816. Such maps, limited to 100 per edition, have sold for $50,000 with one print dealer offering one in 2012 for a retail value of $125,000.
The member consulted the Shop chair and the president of Charity Guild and all agreed she must call the consignor, provide information about the map’s value, and invite the consignor to retrieve the map. The consignor was astonished, happy, and grateful…..
“First, I must express our heartfelt appreciation for the integrity of the Charity Guild volunteers…...The story of this map could have been quite different without these special women. We have concluded the sale of our Melish map to California dealer Barry Ruderman for $30,000 less the restoration expense of $3,000. It will be restored and put up for auction in the future. We are enclosing a donation check to the Charity Guild…..in heartfelt appreciation for the integrity of your organization. This has been an amazing blessing to our family….a treasure that will give great pleasure to someone who loves to view the early history of our great country. And we will be pleased to bless the children that the Charity Guild helps with the donations to Christian charities.”
THANKS FROM THE LABOR AND DELIVERY TEAM AT LBJ HOSPITAL
We thank…..the gracious ladies of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women for your time and commitment to creating the beautiful layettes. While I had the privilege of presenting them, it was your effort that is making the difference in the lives of a mother and her new child. LBJ Hospital serves a needy population, a population who often feel forgotten and neglected. It is through efforts and donations like yours that you reminded them that their lives and the lives of their children are precious. Thank you again for your generosity.
